WhatsApp on PC vs Mobile: Messaging Without Saving Numbers
Whether you are using WhatsApp Web on a laptop or the mobile app on your phone, the steps for messaging an unsaved number are slightly different. Here is the side-by-side guide.
Whether you are using WhatsApp on your phone or on a desktop browser via WhatsApp Web, the workaround for messaging an unsaved number is the same idea — a click-to-chat link — but the exact steps differ slightly. This side-by-side guide covers both.
The Core Idea (Same on Both)
WhatsApp blocks you from typing a new phone number directly into the app to start a chat. The workaround is to construct a special URL containing the number, then open that URL. WhatsApp recognises the format and opens a chat. This works identically on mobile and desktop — only the interface details differ.
If you want a quick way to build that URL without typing it by hand, Instant Message Connector does it in two clicks. The steps below assume you are using it.
Sending on Mobile (iPhone or Android)
Step 1 — Open Instant Message Connector in your mobile browser
Open Safari (iPhone) or Chrome (Android) and go to https://www.instantmessageconnector.com. The form has two boxes and two buttons. No login or app install required.
Step 2 — Enter the number
Type the country code into the first box (without the plus sign) and the local mobile number into the second. For example, for a Singapore number: 65 then 91234567.
Step 3 — Tap "Connect to WhatsApp"
Your browser shows a confirmation pop-up asking if you want to open the link in WhatsApp. Tap Open. WhatsApp launches with the chat already started.
Step 4 — Type your message and send
From here, it is just a normal WhatsApp conversation. The number you messaged does not get added to your phone contacts.
Sending on PC (Windows or Mac)
Step 1 — Set up WhatsApp Web (one-time)
If you have never used WhatsApp on this computer before, you need to link it to your phone first. Open web.whatsapp.com in your browser. On your phone, open WhatsApp, go to Settings → Linked Devices → Link a Device, and scan the QR code shown on your computer. After that, WhatsApp Web stays linked until you log out — no need to repeat this for future messages.
Step 2 — Open Instant Message Connector on your PC
In Chrome, Firefox, Edge, or Safari, go to https://www.instantmessageconnector.com. Same form, same fields.
Step 3 — Enter country code and number, click Connect to WhatsApp
The button opens a new tab with the chat in WhatsApp Web. You can type from your keyboard, paste links, attach files from your computer, and send — much faster than thumb-typing on a phone.
Step 4 — Use the WhatsApp Desktop app (optional)
WhatsApp also has a native desktop app for Windows and Mac. If you have it installed, the click-to-chat link will open in the app instead of the browser. Either works.
Side-by-Side Comparison
| Mobile | PC | |
|---|---|---|
| Setup needed | None. WhatsApp already installed. | Link WhatsApp Web once via QR code. |
| Browser to use | Safari (iPhone), Chrome (Android), or any browser. | Any modern desktop browser. |
| Phone needs to be online? | No | Yes — your phone must have internet for WhatsApp Web to sync. |
| Typing speed | Slower, on-screen keyboard. | Fast, physical keyboard. |
| Attaching files | From phone storage or camera. | From computer file system — easier for documents. |
| Privacy | Number never saved to contacts. | Number never saved to contacts. |
Which Should You Use?
For quick one-off messages — replying to a delivery driver, sending a single follow-up to a lead — the phone is fastest. For longer messages, sharing files from your computer, or handling many conversations in a row, the PC is much more efficient.
The good news is you do not have to choose. Both work, and the click-to-chat workflow is identical from your perspective — only the device changes.
Troubleshooting
"This link could not be opened" on mobile
Usually means WhatsApp is not installed on the device. Install WhatsApp from the App Store or Play Store and try again.
WhatsApp Web shows "Phone not connected"
Your phone needs an active internet connection (Wi-Fi or mobile data) for WhatsApp Web to function. WhatsApp Web is a mirror of your phone's WhatsApp — if the phone is offline, Web is offline too.
The chat opens but says "This phone number is invalid"
Double-check the country code and that you have dropped the leading zero from the local number. If still failing, the recipient may not have a WhatsApp account on that number. The country codes directory has correct codes for every country.
Try It Either Way
Whichever device you have in front of you right now, open Instant Message Connector and send a test message. The fastest way to learn the workflow is to use it once.
