WhatsApp Click-to-Chat Links: Format, Uses, and Limits
Click-to-chat is WhatsApp's official feature for opening conversations from a URL. We break down the exact format, what works, what does not, and how to use them safely.
Most WhatsApp users never realise it, but the app has an official feature for starting conversations directly from a URL — no contact saving, no phone number search, just a single link. It is called click-to-chat. This guide breaks down exactly how the URLs work, what parameters they support, and the limits you should be aware of.
What Is a Click-to-Chat Link?
A click-to-chat link is a regular URL that, when opened on a device with WhatsApp installed, launches WhatsApp and opens a conversation with a specific phone number. The number does not need to be saved in your contacts. WhatsApp introduced the feature to make it easy for businesses to put a "Chat on WhatsApp" button on their websites, but it works just as well for personal use.
The URL Format
There are two official URL formats WhatsApp supports:
https://wa.me/<phone>
https://api.whatsapp.com/send?phone=<phone>
Both do the same thing. The shorter wa.me form is preferred by WhatsApp and easier to share. The api.whatsapp.com form is older and tends to behave slightly differently on some devices (it more reliably opens the app rather than the web version).
The Phone Number
The phone number in the URL must be in full international format: country code followed by local number, no plus sign, no spaces, no dashes. A US number like (415) 555-1234 becomes 14155551234. A UK mobile written as 07700 900123 becomes 447700900123.
If you are not sure of a country's dialing code, check the country codes directory.
Optional: Pre-filled Message
You can also include a pre-written message that appears in the chat input box when the recipient (or you, depending on direction) opens the link:
https://wa.me/14155551234?text=Hi%20there
The text needs to be URL-encoded — spaces become %20, line breaks become %0A, and so on. Most browsers and tools handle this encoding automatically.
What Happens When You Click the Link
The behaviour depends on the device:
- On a phone with WhatsApp installed: the WhatsApp app opens with a chat to the specified number ready to go.
- On a desktop with WhatsApp Web logged in: the chat opens in your browser via web.whatsapp.com.
- On a device without WhatsApp: a landing page appears with a "Continue to chat" button, which only works if WhatsApp is installed.
Real-World Use Cases
Customer Support and Sales
Many businesses put a "Chat on WhatsApp" button on their website that uses a click-to-chat link to their support number. Visitors can start a conversation without searching for the number first or going through a contact form.
QR Codes
Encode a click-to-chat link as a QR code and print it on a flyer, menu, or business card. Scanning the code opens a WhatsApp chat directly. Restaurants, real estate agents, and event organisers use this heavily.
One-Off Personal Messages
This is the use case Instant Message Connector solves. Need to message a tradesman, a Marketplace seller, or a delivery driver once? Generate the link, open it, send your message, never see the number in your contacts again.
Customer Re-engagement Campaigns
Businesses include click-to-chat links in marketing emails or SMS so customers can reply on WhatsApp instead of email. Higher response rates, better customer experience.
The Limits You Should Know
The Recipient Must Be on WhatsApp
If the number you target does not have a WhatsApp account, clicking the link shows an error: "The phone number shared via URL is invalid." There is no way to know in advance whether a number is registered with WhatsApp without trying.
Pre-filled Text Has a Length Limit
The exact character limit depends on the browser, but generally URLs over about 2000 characters get truncated. Keep pre-filled messages short — a couple of sentences at most.
You Cannot Pre-fill the Recipient's Reply
The text parameter only sets the message in the input box. The recipient still has to send it themselves. There is no way to actually deliver a message via the URL alone.
Group Chat Links Are Different
Click-to-chat links open one-on-one conversations. For groups, WhatsApp has a separate group invite link format that works differently.
Business Account Buttons Are Limited
If you are a WhatsApp Business user, the catalog and quick-reply buttons in your business profile are separate from click-to-chat URLs and have their own restrictions.
Safety and Etiquette
Click-to-chat is just a convenient way to start a conversation. It does not bypass WhatsApp's anti-spam systems. If you mass-message strangers from a click-to-chat link, you will get reported and banned just as quickly as with any other approach. Use it for genuine one-to-one conversations, not bulk outreach.
Generate a Click-to-Chat Link in Two Steps
Building the URL manually each time is fiddly. The Instant Message Connector tool generates the link from a country code and phone number — no URL encoding, no typing the protocol, no risk of getting the format wrong. Enter the digits, click the button, the chat opens.
Telegram Has the Same Feature
Telegram offers an equivalent URL format: https://t.me/+<international-number>. The same Instant Message Connector form generates both — useful when you are not sure which app the recipient uses.
